Amager Bakke
Copenhagen, 2024
Amager Bakke, also known as Amager Slope or CopenHill, is Denmark’s main waste-to-energy plant, located in Copenhagen’s Amager district.
Danish architect Bjarke Ingels designed a highly technological and environmentally conscious structure (its technical features make it the least polluting waste-to-energy plant in the world) with a playful, multifunctional, and capable of accommodating other uses (three ski slopes of varying difficulty, a pedestrian path with steps, a hiking trail, and two ski lifts), thus becoming a one-of-a-kind local attraction.
At the heart of Bjarke Ingels’s design is the concept of making what would normally be an ugly, unpleasant, and polluting building beautiful, enjoyable, and even open to visitors.
