Ralph Erskine in Svappavaara

Ralph Erskine, 1960s

In the mining settlement of Svappavaara, south of Kiruna, Ralph Erskine designed a residential system to mediate between industrial expansion and the subarctic environment.

At its center stands the “Ormen Långe,” a long, curved housing block conceived as a protective spine against wind and climate, gathering inhabitants within a continuous built form.

Alongside this structure, smaller detached houses were scattered across the landscape, introducing a more intimate scale of dwelling. Together, the two typologies outlined a balance between protection and openness, collective life and isolation.

With the decline of mining activity, Svappavaara entered a phase of contraction. Today, Erskine’s architecture remains as a fragment of that vision, suspended between utopia and obsolescence, still embedded in the landscape it sought to inhabit.
